The World Artists Experiences’ Writing Project Maryland Connects with the World 2016-2017

Who can enter?

Any Maryland student in grades 3-12

What is the theme?

Building a More Peaceful World Through Kindness and coMPassion

  • Poems and first person narrative prose, not fiction, should be about your experiences, thoughts and feelings as a member of our interconnected, global world.

  • What are some things you have seen or have done that served to create a more compassionate world?

  • How do you think we can work together to create kinder, more peaceful relationships with people who are different from you?

    What are the guidelines?
  • Please follow the full instructions at www.worldartists.org and click on International Education 2017 Writing Project for complete guidelines, directions and submission form.

  • Only one poem or non-fiction prose requested per student.**

  • Poems should be 30 lines or less. Non-fiction Prose no longer than 500 words.

  • Please submit your entry in Microsoft WORD, on a single page, using Arial font, in 12 pt.

  • Attach your entry at the BOTTOM of the online submission form.

  • Please give your writing a title and double check it for correct spelling, grammar, etc.

**Teachers are encouraged to provide opportunities for students to receive and make use of feedback on their work before it is submitted.

When is the deadline?

Entries Must Be received By Midnight on December 11, 2016

A panel of respected writers, headed by former Maryland Poet Laureate Dr. Michael S. Glaser will select the works to be published in the Anthol- ogy. Criteria includes: 1) the quality of the ideas and insights about creating a kinder, more compassionate global community; and 2) the effective use of good writing tools that incorporates clear narrative, imagery and comparisons, effective use of details, sounds and rhythms, good grammar, spelling, etc. Representation of voices and diversity of subject matter and points of view will be taken into account in the final selection.
