“Distant Roots, Local Flowers: New Music for Gamelan in America.”

Jody Diamond, director of the American Gamelan Institute, will discuss how Indonesian gamelan music and the creative work of Indonesian composers and teachers has inspired artists in America to both build instruments and compose new music. Beginning in the 1950s, the number of gamelan ensembles in artistic and educational settings in the United States has grown to nearly 200. The gamelan, with roots in Indonesia, is a vibrant resource for new American music. In this presentation we will look at some of the “flowers” that have blossomed from this interaction.
